Tier 1 ยท Algebra + Number Theorymedium-hard
The Diophantine Hunter
Integer solutions only. Hunt them down.
The Tell
Equations like 3x + 5y = 120 with 'x and y are positive integers,' followed by 'which of the following could be...'
The Trap
Solving algebraically and then trying to reason abstractly. Faster: just enumerate.
The Approach
- Isolate one variable: e.g., y = (120 โ 3x) / 5.
- Find which integer values of x make y an integer (use divisibility).
- List all valid (x, y) pairs systematically โ there are usually 3-10 of them.
- Compute the quantity asked for each pair and check against answer choices.
- Don't forget to apply additional constraints (positive, distinct, range).
Why It Matters
Multi-select 'which of the following could be' questions almost always come from this pattern.
